Full Tilt apparently reached a deal today with European investors who will put up enough money to pay back players:

This is very good news for myself and others with money stuck on there, as yesterday appeared to be pretty bad news.

For those that haven't heard, Full Tilt had their license to operate suspended yesterday: http://www.parttimepoker.com/report-full-tilt-shut-down-by-alderney-gambling-commission

Players from anywhere in the world can no longer play there, deposit, withdrawl, or even login for that matter.  A hearing is set for July 26th.

For those of you now looking for somewhere else to play, I highly recommend Lock Poker.  We have good traffic, good software, good rewards, and good withdrawl options.

Another bill to regulate online poker in the US was introduced this month as well: http://www.parttimepoker.com/new-bill-to-regulate-online-poker-introduced-in-u-s-congress

I have to think online poker will be regulated within a few years.  Surely our government can't be that dumb can they?  Then again, considering it hasn't been regulated yet they clearly are that dumb.  Still, I think something will get done in the near future.  Online poker is just too big and lucrative at this point.

I did some table selection articles for parttimepoker & WPT magazine but neither is online yet as far as I know.  I'll post them sometime after they're up.

I hardly played in June, playing less than 80 hours.  I'm always busy on weekends, had relatives in town for much of the month, and I was sick.  I did pretty well when I played though, playing mostly HU SNGs.

Outside of poker I went camping with my family but the weather was very poor for the summer as it was 60 degrees with some rain.  We had my grandma & granpa's 60th wedding anniversary party so we had lots of relatives staying with us throughout the month.  I went to the Timberwolves draft party with a friend & was shocked that we actually didn't screw up for once.  Considering the top 2 players were obvious it was hard to mess up the #2 pick, but rumors were flying about us taking Kanter, not to mention trading the pick to  anyone and everyone, including awful trades that made no sense like Steve Nash for the #2 pick or Paul Gasol for Kevin Love & the #2 pick.  It brought me back to the numerous T-Wolves fraft day screweups, including trading Ray Allen for Stephon Marbury, trading Brandon Roy for Randy Foye, taking Johnny Flynn over Stephen Curry, and the countless other 1st round busts we had like Ndudi Ebi.  With Ebi I think Kevin McHale watched The Air Up There before the draft & thought he had some great idea.  Ebi rarely played and was out of the league within a year.  I think you know how those other trades/picks went.  Derrick Williams may be a similar player to Michael Beasley, but he's far better than the next best option and we can always figure out trades at a later date.

Here's me camping with my 67 lb lap dog:

Team Vogel vs cancer weekend (http://www.teamvogelvscancer.com/team-vogel-fundraiser.html) was a big success.  I had my fastest 5K time of 24:39.  It's pretty good for not being a runner.  I would be interested to see what kind of time I would have got back when I was in top shape at 20 or 21.  My kickball team (10 Man Wolfpack) did alright, finishing 3rd.  It was a lot of fun though.  Many of us were just drinking and having a good time.  It's amazing how sore a guy can get playing kickball.  I workout year round, do some pretty intense workouts like P90x, & am in pretty good shape.  Then I go play kickball & I'm sore as hell the next day and still sore 4 days later.  I know it's just because my body isn't used to using the muscles in that way with the kicking, all the starting & stopping, etc... but I still find it funny to be sore from kickball.  I know I'm not alone on that one either as everyone else I talked to was sore too.  After kickball we went to the silent auction.  Our friend Nick was on a billboard for a truck driving school.  My brother got a copy of the picture that was on the billboard and had him sign it when they were drinking one night.  He entered it into the Team Vogel silent auction.  I decided that a Nick Granseth autograph should surely go for more than autographs by Michael Cuddyer, Joe Mauer, Gale Sayers, or Adrian Peterson so I put $450 down on it at the last minute, to make sure nobody outbid me for the prized piece.  After the auction we went and watched my brother Jeff's software team, who took 3rd.  We were gonna watch the homerun derby but it was raining so he just went home & showered before we headed out to the bars for the night.

Here's a picture of me with the one and only Nickie Geeeeeeeeeeeeez and my prized silent auction puchase:

My brother Jason owns a Mexican restaurant (Chula Vista in Winona).  They're working on adding some man vs food type challenge & he wanted people to try it out before they put it on the menu to make sure it wasn't too easy or hard.  Jason wanted me to try it out since he knew I could eat.  The challenge was to eat 3 dinner size chimichangas over a bed of rice in 45 minutes.  One would be beef, one would be chicken, and the other would be beef with jalapenos.  When he told me about it over the phone I thought it would be pretty easy.  Jason had 2 bigger guys he knew could eat try it out on Saturday and they both quit about 2/3 of the way through.  That had me thinking it might not be as easy as I thought but I still figured I could do it.  I went in the Sunday of Team Vogel weekend and when I saw how much rice they put on the plate my confidence dipped a little more, but I was still probably 60-70% confident I'd be able to do it.  It wasn't easy.  I had to take drinks of water with each bite on the last chimi to get the food down and was very full by the end.  I finished it in 42 minutes though.  Jeff's girlfriend was taking pictures & recording parts of the end on her phone so maybe I'll get those from her & post them.  I'm sure it was entertaining to the outsider.  When I was done I felt fine despite being very full.  That all changed when I got in the car.  Paula & I were riding with my mom back to the softball fields to watch Jeff's team play.  The motion of the car definitely did not agree with me and I was wondering if I would make it to the field without puking.  I made it there but I just felt awful.  A couple hours later we headed back to my mom's house.  We were stopped at a stoplight and it happened.  I opened the door and started puking.  The light ended up turning green and I closed the door.  My mom pulled over on the side of the road and then I puked out practically the rest of my meal.  It was amazing how much puke there was.  I sure felt better afterwards though.

I thought Hangover 2 was a bust.  I didn't expect it to be as good as the 1st Hangover or anything but I expected it to be better than it was.  It's still worth watching  for some laughs though.

For those that don't know, a hit and run in poker is when you leave after playing for a very short period of time, simply because you are winning.  I've been playing HU SNGs lately and have been accused of this by some regs.  I'm going to talk mostly about why accusing me of a hit and run is stupid, and I think my situation will also apply to many regs.

First off, I usually sit 1st.  There are plenty of regs who sit 1st that I will gladly always sit or will sit sometimes depending on how the action is, but for the most part I sit 1st.  When I sit 1st I'm taking the risk of being sat by a good reg I'd rather not play.  However, by sitting 1st I am agreeing to play anyone for 1 game.  I'm not entering some contract where I agree to sit and play you for 40 games.  Accusing someone of a hit and run when you sat them is so lol in my mind.  There's really only 3 regs I can think of so far on Lock that sit me and I regularely decline a rematch against.  I either feel they have an edge or that the edge is too small for it to be worth it regardless of who has it.  These aren't necessarily the best 3 players who sit me, but they're the players I feel play the best against me.  Regardless, my goal in poker isn't to show everybody how big my balls are.  I don't get into big dick swinging ego contests.  I'm trying to enjoy myself and maximize my hourly rate.  There's certain players I'm just not going to sit and rematch because it doesn't make any sense.  It usually doesn't make sense for them to rematch me either but poker players tend to have large egos & think they're much better than they are.

There's other regs where I will gladly 4 table them at certain times, but when I get better action, particularly at high stakes, I'm not going to keep playing them just so they don't whine.  Again, I'm here to make money.  If I can 4 table some reg fish at $254s I'm not gonna sit and play a reasonable player at $91.80s.  Often better opportunities arise.  Hell, the other day I was getting some good action & happily 5 tabling and getting rematches against what I felt was weaker competition.  Then all of a sudden 4 games popup almost simulataneously against a reg who I absolutely love playing.  Beyond the fact that I don't want to 9 table HU (lol) I declined all rematches except for 1, because I don't like to play more than 4-6 tables of HU and would rather play the new reg than the other games.  This happens all the time except it's usually not 4 tables at a time.  I'll decide what the best games are to rematch & decline the rest.  Again, I'm not playing poker to satisfy the ignorant wishes of other players.  I'm here to make money & enjoy myself.

There's also occasional times where I'll have 10-15 minutes to kill and just decide to fire up a few HU SNGs.  I'm not going to cancel my other plans just because you want to rematch me.  Likewise, I'm not going to choose not to play for only 10-15 minutes just so some reg doesn't throw a hissy fit and accuse me of a hit and run.  For the record, I always try to give regs who I rematch a HU of when I'm quitting so they know when my last games are.  If that's not enough then you might have some issues.

Lastly, if I decline your rematch it's not going to be my last game on Lock.  I regularely open sit the highest stakes HU STs so if you really want to play me that bad then you shouldn't have any problem finding me in the future, especially once the summer is over and I'm back to a more normal playing schedule.  If that's not good enough for you and you really have to keep playing me until you're unstuck against me for the day then you may have some psychological tilt issues that should be dealt with.  Profits and losses are the same whether they come today, tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year.

As far as sitting 2nd & not playing long I'll just say that almost everything above applies as well.  Unless I'm only playing for 10-15 minutes I NEVER sit somebody with the intention of only playing them once & declining a rematch.  However, if games start filling better and more lucrative opportunities arise I'm not going to rematch you just because I sat you.  I'll play as low as $40.80s to get some games going but I'm not going to sit and rematch somebody at that level if I start getting better action.

In regards to accusing of recreational players of a hit and run, come on man.  For one, most of them probably aren't even aware of the so called unwritten ethical rule of the hit and run in poker.  Secondly, they're just out to have fun.  Don't take it serious.  If you play only 1 game then you're still more likely to win than they are if you're a good player.  They're here to have fun.  When you sit and whine and berate them that takes the fun away from the game for them and may cause them to leave.  Would you rather play a losing player for 1 game & a winning reg for 3 or a winning reg for 4 games?  If you want the former then you should make their experience as fun as possible.  Obviously I'm not saying all "recreational" players are losing players, but it's clearly more likely than a reg being a losing player.

A lot of regs also seem to take it personal if I sit them.  Don't.  I don't have anything against you.  I just feel you are the most profitable opponent for me to play at the time.  That doesn't mean I think you're some fish.  I most likely respect your game but just feel I've found some leaks that I can exploit and profit from.  I know it can be frustrating getting sat by a reg you would rather not play but the best thing to do is just wish them luck and play your A game.  Hopefully you can convince them you aren't worth playing.  When games are slow I'll sometimes sit regs to feel them out and see how they play.  I might play one reg only a few times before deciding they aren't worth playing while I might play another reg 150 times before deciding that.  When the latter occurs it's usually because that player ended up making some good adjustments but it just took them a while to make all the adjustments.  The same thing happens to me.  Sometimes I find leaks in regs that I can exploit immediately.  Other times I have to play somebody over and over and over before seeing some tendencies I can exploit.  Some tendencies are a lot more obvious and easier to exploit than others.  Sitting regs can certainly backfire on me as well.  Sometimes I'll sit a player that avoids me to feel them out.  Then they'll get all pissed & start spite sitting me, letting ego get in the way of profit.  Other times I might sit a reg who avoids me and they end up being a super tough opponent & believe they can profit against me enough to make it worth it.  Then all of a sudden they're auto sitting me.  It can work both ways so I deal with it too.

I will end this with an amusing story.  On Black Friday I was sitting a $1K lobby when  a reg who normally didn't sit me sat me & typed in the chat that he knows I'm good but he's just looking for action.  I won't disclose his name out of respect but I'll tell you he's played over 50,000 HU games on Full Tilt & is up almost $500K in them, so he's no n00b.  I played regs quite a bit on FTP, especially at those stakes so I just said gl & figured I'd see how he is.  I then sat a couple more $1Ks & he sat behind me.  After playing him for a little bit I found some leaks that I thought I could exploit and I believed I had an edge.  It doesn't take much of an edge for a $1K to be highly profitable so I proceeded to 3-4 table him at $1Ks for 79 games because I wasn't getting any other good action.  It was approaching lunch time & I was starving so when some rematches started I told him "last 4, I have to eat lunch, GGs, gl."  Instead of replying with GGs, gl he decided to go off on me in the chat.  "Play me for a little bit, run like a God and leave."  He then repeated with similar comments.  All I could do was lol.  He sat me 1st.  I then 3-4 tabled him for over 2 hours at the highest stakes STs that are available.  People don't do that very often, especially at such high stakes.  While I ran above expectation, it was barely at all.  My bb/100 was 1.98 while my EV bb/100 was 1.41.  That's not a very significant difference.  I also gave him fair warning when I was quitting & was very nice to him.  Moreover, nobody knew what would happen later that day, so the assumption was that he would be able to play me plenty more on FTP in the future.  It just amazes me that pros who have played that long can still have a mindset like that.  I'd say his chat was pretty close to accusing me of a hit and run.

Hopefully this opened up the mind of some players who complain about hit and runs or was at least interesting.

May wasn't a good month for poker.  I played mostly 6 mans between multiple sites & ran pretty terrible.

Outside of poker we went to Winona a couple times for my brother Jason's bday & Mother's Day, went to a Twins game with 7 friends and went out afterwards, & went to a Tim McGraw/Luke Bryan concert.  For music I like a variety & listen to mostly rap, classic rock, & country.  I can't really think of what else I did in May.

My hours will likely be down during the summer, & especially during these 1st 2 months.  We already have plans for basically every weekend of the summer, which has been the case in recent years as well.  This month I also have a lot of relatives visiting & next month I'll be going camping for a week.  On top of that the weather is obviously very nice & I've been doing a lot to help out with my Lock referrals & answers questions about Lock on 2+2.  I likely won't be putting in 40 hour weeks regularely til the end of the summer or September.  I usually play less in the summer & more in the winer anyway.  I'm going to do my best though.

I am pretty confident that I can make some nice money on this year though once I get the proper roll online & start putting in my normal hours now that I'm playing exclusively on Lock & since I'm back to playing mostly HU.

As noted above I switched back over to mostly HU SNGs again, which has been my plan all along.  I'm currently 4-6 tabling HU STs between $40-$100, with the occasional 6 man ST thrown in.  Hopefully I'll have the roll on Lock to be back playing the highest stakes HU & 6 mans by next month.  It's a little frustrating as I have about $100K frozen between FTP & AP, money I need to get off other US sites like Cake, and most of my other money is invested in retirement accounts.  I do still have a good amount of money readily available but I'd prefer to save that for bills in case I have a bad run in poker.

It's been pretty comical playing under my real name on Lock (SN: JaredHubbard).  A lot of players don't know my real name.  It has been especially comical in HU where I see players who used to actively avoid me on FTP sitting me and berating me.  Then they'll mention my stats, which are mostly 6 man STs where half the ROI of HU STs probably isn't even sustainable, obviously leading to a ton of variance, and the sample size of small.  These are also players who clearly don't know how to use the advanced search tool on sharkscope.  If I'm playing somebody HU I search their HU NL Hold em stats only.  I don't care if they're the best 9 man SNG player in the world because they can still suck at HU.  Likewise, a player can suck at other forms of poker but be a phenomenal HU player.  I'm below EV in both 6 man & HU so far on Lock, but that will work itself out over the long run.

Holdem manager can't correctly recognize HU ST buy-ins on Merge and therefore the adjusted profit/ROI function does not  work for those games.  However, if you play these games there's still a good way to tell how you are running, aside from what you see in game & comparing it to your ROI in these games on other sites.  In HEM go to reports under tourney.  Then select the report Expected Value - By Stakes.  From there you will want to look at the bottom # in the bb/100 & EV bb/100 columns.  The bb/100 is your unadjusted # & the EV bb/100 is your adjusted #.  These are chip EV #s but HU is chip EV anyway so that doesn't matter.  Obviously if they EV bb/100 # is significantly higher than the bb/100 # then you're likely running below EV & vice versa.  1 thing to keep in mind is that this is going to give you a better idea of your average ROI, while the general adjusted ROI option gives you a better idea of your total ROI because it treats 1500 chips at a $100 buy-in the same as 1500 chips in a $20 buy-in, whereas adjusted ROI would give these chips a $ value based on the buy-in & prize structure.  As pointed out in this post: http://jhub3000.livejournal.com/#asset-jhub3000-90242 I tend to put more stock in average ROI than total ROI anyway.  Even when looking at adjusted ROI, a large amount of positive or negative variance at your highest stakes can make your total ROI look much better or worse than it will be in the long run, whereas avg. ROI averages everything out between the buy-ins.  If I see the stats of 2 players & don't know anything about their actual games:

Player x: 3,000 games, $100 avg. stake, 2% avg. ROI, -$2,000
Player y: 3,000 games, $100 avg. stake, 2% avg. ROI, +$2,000

I would give more credit to player x than player y, despite the fact that player x is down $2K & player y has $2K in profit.  It's pretty likely that player x has just ran below EV at his highest games, while player y has ran above EV in highest stakes games.  Total profit can be misleading & I'd rather put more stock in average ROI than total profit.  One trick for looking at sharkscope stats & trying to predict if a player has ran above or below EV is to multiply their avg. ROI by their avg. stake.  If this # is lower than their avg. profit then they're likely running above EV, particularly at their highest stakes.  If this # is higher than their avg. profit then they're likely running below EV, particularly at their highest stakes.  However, always tread carefully with regards to sample sizes.  Players can play thousands of games and still be 5% or occasionally more off of their true ROI due to variance.

I was formally introduced in an email to the other Lock Pros today along with the signing of 3 other players who I think will be great additions to the team.  I'll report who they are later.  My bio & picture should be up on the Lock website sometime soon & then my name will be in red while I'm playing so that I can look really, really, ridiculously cool.

Due to my confidentiality agreement with Lock, I will no longer be posting profits outside of those actually made directly at the tables for June and onward.

If you do everything right you will find that Lock has some pretty good software.  I'll run through my setup.  I think heavy multitablers will find this especially useful:

-Under the general tab I have checked:
x Don't Prompt When Leaving Games.  If you accidentally click out of a game it can be a pain but overall I prefer this option much better for multitabling.  USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

-Under contacts tab:
There's not much to do here.  The friends & privacy is obv player dependant.  You might want  to setup the tags images differently.  For example, I labeled the crown as decent & the red chip as breakeven.

-Under the game tab I have checked:
x Auto Muck
x 4 Color Deck
x Show Winning Percentages
x Hide Hand Descriptions
x Show player chat (depends what your preference is)
Hand History:
x Keep Hand History
-Under display tab:
x Single
x High Graphics Quality (you may want to go lower if your PC is slower)
Depending on your setup you may want to play around with this tab.  I have 2 30" monitors & 2 20" monitors so I never tile, cascade, etc...  Games just come in w/ no overlap.  It's all a matter of preference & monitor setup.

-Under Buy In/Rebuy Tab:
I don't currently play any cash games so I haven't done anything with this tab.  If you do play cash you will certainly want to look into it.

-Under Sounds Tab:
x Play sounds only on my action (I think this one is an absolute must for multitablers.  Otherwise there's too many sounds going on & it's hard to tell when it's your turn on different tables.)

I think SNG players will find the all in button to be an amazing feature of the software.  When you hit the all in button it instantly bets your whole stack.  There's no clicking the table, then clicking all in, & then hitting enter nonsense.  It's 1 click & your goal is accomplished.

Now that you've changed your settings it's time to download MergeKeys:
http://runbetterpoker.com/

The above link has temporarily been moved to http://ns2059.hostgator.com/~jl12345/

MergeKeys is an AHK program like Table Ninja.  It's currently in beta mode & is free.  I believe it's essential for multitablers.  Follow the instructions on the site & download MergeKeys.

Now let's talk about the MergeKeys settings:

Under pot betting tab:
-Setup the pot betting keys to whatever you would like.  I have 1/2 pot as F9, 2/3 pot as F10, 3/4 pot as F11, pot as F8, and all in as F12.  The way I have it setup I just keep my 4 left handed fingers minus my thumb on keys F9 through F12 so I have my pinky on F9 & pointer on F12.  If I want to take a certain action I then just press my finger down on the appopriate key.  If I want to bet pot I slide my pinky to F8 & if I want to register of deregister I slide my pinky to F7.  The 1/2 pot hotkey will also minraise preflop & I use the pot hotkey to 3x from the BB when a player limps HU.
-Again, I don't use any of the mouse buttons, but I know players like voss1313 love them.  Figure out what your preference is & roll with it.  I might try setting my right mouse button to fold.
-Below that I the only thing I have on is Auto-fire bet/raise when pot betting buttons used.  If you have F9 setup for a 2/3 pot bet this allows you to simply press F9 and the bet will be done, rather than having to press F9 & then enter.

Under layout manager tab:
-Again, because of my monitor setup and preference I don't use this tab.  However, many of you will want to look into it.

Under player setup tab:
-Make sure you complete the auto setup before running MergeKeys.  You have to have the Lock Poker lobby open when you do this & I believe you have to click the Lock lobby after clicking auto setup.
-Also make sure you select the correct table mode you use.  I prefer normal but I know a lot of people prefer mini.

-Under donate tab:
If you like the software feel free to donate.

Under random beta keys tab:
-Table frame thickness: 1 (I'm not a fan of frames)
-Virtual Mouse Wheel: I don't use any of these but look into it if you're interested.
-On the right side:
-On: check if available when folding
-On: Handle Tourn SNG/Reg windows (This allows you to register & deregister from games with 1 click)
-SNG/Tournament register (lobby): F7 (This allows you to click on a game in the lobby & click a key on your keyboard to register for that game)
-On: auto-activate window under cursor (With this option you don't have to click the table before you make a bet.  Just move your mouse pointer to anywhere on the table & it activates that table.)
-On: Auto Time Bank (With this feature it's tough time timeout.  If you don't get to the table on time it automatically activates your timebank)

Depending on your setup you may want some different features on or off in that section.  For example, I think cash players will definitely want handle buy-in windows (cash only) on.

Whenever making changes to MergeKeys MAKE SURE YOU CLICK SAVE AND CONTINUE BEFORE EXITING.

I haven't used it or talked to anyone who has but you may also want to check out MergeMods:
http://runbetterpoker.com/?q=MergeMods

MergeMods allows you to use Full Tilt Sounds, Full Tilt carpets, etc... while playing on Lock Poker.

Now you're ready to optimally multitable on Lock Poker.

Today I signed a sponsorship deal with Lock Poker to be part of their Lock Pro Elite team, which can be found here:
http://lockpoker.eu/pro/

I'm not on the webpage yet but I'd imagine I will be in the near future.  They will also be announcing the signings of 3 other pros.  I play on Lock under the screen name JaredHubbard.

Don't let the .eu fool you.  They accept US players.

I am very excited to be working with Lock and I see a bright future with the company.  The Lock pros and I will be working directly with the Lock product so if you have any suggestions please let me know and I'll see what I can do.  I would like to thank CEO/owner Jennifer Larson and the Lock team for the great opportunity they have given me.

Lock is the leading skin on the Merge network, which is the largest online poker network serving US players.  They introduced an excellent new VIP program today and you can view it here:

http://lockpoker.eu/vip/

For those wondering, The Vault is a security feature on Lock that allows you to create your own 4 digit pin and security question that you would be required to answer before accessing your funds.  As far as I know, no site currently serving US players has anything like it.

I know a lot of you will be excited that I don't have the Cake yellow, black, & brown colors on my blog anymore.  I hope you like the new layout.  This blog will likely be moved to its own domain in the near future anyway.

I will probably be writing more in the next few days.

I also improved the picture layout at the bottom of the page & added some pictures.  On the new site I'll probably have a pictures section.  I guess my wife or somebody I know needs to take more pictures.
