Fellow Lock Elite Pro Matt "all_in_at420" Stout is my next interviewee for my new weekly interview series.  You can read the interview below.

How did you get started in poker?  How old were you?  What did you play?  How did you progress through the stakes and different games?

I actually learned how to play five-card draw and then stud from my sister starting when I was just four years old. We never played much growing up, it was just one of the many card and board games we played occasionally. Then when I was 19 and in my sophomore year of college my buddy Nick Luisi IMed me and asked if I wanted to play some ".25-.50 limit hold'em" and I had no clue what he was talking about. He said it was poker, so I said "I'll be there." I literally get chills thinking back to that IM now, because it was a turning point for the better in my life no matter where I go from here. I made $4.25 in about five hours. I remember eating a Wendy's bacon cheeseburger from the dollar menu that I bought with my profits on the way home and thinking about how awesome it was that profit from poker had paid for the meal. I was BEYOND hooked.

I started playing $5-10 games around my college, along with a $30 monthly re-entry tournament. When the games around my school weren't enough I started playing online. I forced myself to accumulate a million play chips before I started putting real $ online. Then I proceeded to get crushed for $1000 I couldn't afford to lose in $5-10 MTTs and SNGs online.

Eventually I got the hang of it and started winning within a year with a lot of study and practice. I won $26 and $75 MTTs online for $3k and $5k respectively to build my online roll while I was still under 21, even though I lost a lot back in cash games. That's how I learned that $5/10 NL probably wasn't the game to play on a $6k roll!

After two years of playing pretty heavily I turned 21 and had a pretty sick run in Atlantic City. I built up a bankroll with weekly AC tournaments and took a shot at the WSOP-C Caesars AC event in March of 2006. I bricked the first $340, but won a SNG into the $560 second event. I ended up chopping that final table with Matt Glantz for $34k (who has since become like an uncle to me in poker), and my career had officially begun. I went on to win two seats to the $10k main event in $200+r satellites that week, played one and sold one, and my bankroll was officially on swoll. =)

I kept grinding live prelims and satelliting into main events and eventually took a big chunk of my roll and threw it online when I decided I'd rather focus on tournaments full-time and didn't want to fill in the gaps with live cash games anymore. I found success in the high stakes MTT's almost immediately, and I take great pride as being known as one of the best players at successfully bridging the gap between online and live success.

How have you gone about improving over the years?  Have you watched a lot of training videos?  Have you read a lot of books?  Have you done a lot of calculations?  Have you talked strategy with a lot of other players?

It's a bit of everything you mentioned, really. I'd say in terms of how much of each, it'd be: talking > videos > calculations > books. That's not to say it's the optimal blend, but that's reflects what I do the most of in reality. I definitely need to do more work on my game and have been a little more complacent than I should be, which is completely unacceptable in such a competitive game where players are getting better and better.

How old are you now?

I just turned 27.

Do you currently play any games besides MTTs?

I play a little bit of NL cash games, but never get as much satisfaction out of succeeding in them as I do making deep runs in tournaments. That's made it difficult to really develop my skills in them over the years.  I'm working on my PLO cash game, especially short-handed, because I think it's the wave of the future and because I personally enjoy the game a lot. I'm planning on working on my stud games this year, because I love 8-game mix tournaments and Stud/Stud8 are the only games I think I need huge improvement in to be competitive. I also want to work on my heads-up game, both in SNGs and cash.

How many tables do you usually play online?

I usually play about 6-10 comfortably, and try to cap it at 15ish. I've played up to 23 at a time when I was trying to chase a PocketFives Triple Crown, though. My brain wanted to explode.

How many hours a week do you usually play?

For the first few years of career I played insane amounts...probably averaging around 80-90 hours a week. There's an addiction element to it that most successful players write off and ignore, because if you're making money at it there's not really a problem...in a way. This has a huge impact on a lot of players' social lives though, impacting relationships with friends, significant others, and even families.

Some players become so engrossed in poker that it becomes difficult for them to carry a conversation with anyone who doesn't understand what it means to checkraise someone on the river. It's more like being a workaholic than an alcoholic or "degenerate gambler", but it's an addiction nonetheless. I've spent the last couple years trying to play a lot less poker and focus more on my family, friends, and interests outside of poker. It has been rewarding, both in terms of the relationships I have with people outside the poker world and for my game.  It makes poker feel like less of a grind, because I'm not in there just busting my ass every day. Just about any time I take a few days off from poker I really start to crave it, which is a constant reminder of why I chose this career.

How would you describe your style of play in MTTs?

Anywhere from nitbox to spazztard, depending on the situation. I find it hysterical when people tell me they've had arguments with other pros where one person talks about how nitty I am, and the is shocked and insists that I'm a spewbox. It means I'm doing something right!

What kind of a computer setup do you have for playing?  Do you use any poker software?

I have a Dell Vostro 420 desktop with two monitors, 30" and 24". I use Holdem Manager and haven't set up MergeKeys yet. I used to use TableNinja as well.

Do you focus more on live or online play?

That depends. I've always been one of the very few players who goes back and forth between live and online play a ton. I just go with whichever one has the best tournament action at the time. I try to estimate travel expenses, amount of buy ins, and expected ROI (hardest part obv) across my options and plan accordingly.

You have had some nice success in MTTs.  What was your biggest cash & how did it feel to win that much money in one tournament?

$266k for 3rd place in the 2009 WPT World Poker Finals $10k event was my biggest cash. I took two sick beats at the final table including one for 2/3 of the chips in play so it was a bit of a bittersweet win, but no day where you win a quarter million can really be considered a bad day. I was really happy with the result, and the fact that I knew I'd played my best in just about every spot at the final table helped in getting over my unlucky breaks.

What are your short term & long term poker goals?

Short-term: To keep making a good living post-DOJ for now...that's about all I can ask for at the moment.

Long-term: I plan on dying with a bracelet and a WPT title.

Do you have any plans of branching off into other forms of poker in the future?

Yes, especially PLO and 8-game. (Talked about this above tho).

At this point in your career does poker feel more like a hobby or a job?  Do you still enjoy the game as much as you used to?

It's definitely a job and not a hobby, but I still have a strong passion for the game. I can't say that I enjoy grinding out NL MTT's as much as I used to, but I still enjoy doing it and miss it when I take time off. That's one of the main reasons I made a conscious decision to stop playing so much poker as soon as I began to feel the slightest bit burnt out from years of grinding. I also try to make sure to have the occasional drunken, dealers' choice, wild card home game with friends to remind myself of what makes me love poker so much.

How long do you plan on playing poker professionally?

I don't have a definite plan on this, but I do plan on eventually going back to college and possibly getting a MBA/JD (masters in business/law degree). Chances are that even when I start to pursue other avenues in life, I'll be playing a good amount of poker on the side and still taking it just as seriously.

You were previously working on starting a charity poker tour.  Is that something that is still in the works?  If so, could you tell us more about it?

There's a group of us, including Mike Frazin and Stu Nitzkin, who put together a proposal regarding the proposed Charity Poker Tour being aligned with the World Poker Tour, since the WPT had plans on expanding its charity efforts anyway. We worked closely with my good friend and WPT Executive Tour Director Matt Savage on the proposal, and are still waiting to see what comes of it. We'll likely try to align ourselves with another tour if that initiative fails.

You have been a pro for Lock since the summer of 2009.  How has your experience at Lock been as you have seen them progress from the Cake network, to the Merge network, to what they have grown into since Black Friday?

It has been an amazing ride. I always believed in the site, but to see the exponential growth that Lock has achieved has been incredible. I was one of the very first pros to sign with the site, and one of even fewer to stick by Jenn's side through the hell we went through switching from the Cake network to the Merge network. Continuing to believe in her and represent the site through that turmoil has made it that much more rewarding to watch them turn into one of the biggest sites in the USA after Black Friday.

When you aren't puking on 17th century antiques at Lock retreats, what do you like to do in your spare time besides poker?

Low blow. Will I ever live that one down? Sometimes a man arrives at a LockPRO retreat after a very long flight and is ready to party...a little too hard. =)

I actually love visiting family, especially my 9 nieces and nephews. Taking them Christmas shopping is one of the things I look forward to all year. I go to a lot of concerts, especially rap concerts. I'm a die hard New York Rangers fan and have been to a third of their home games so far this season despite living in Vegas and Costa Rica (both >2500 miles from Madison Square Garden). I just got my first tattoo, which was the Rangers shield on my right arm. I used to play ice and roller hockey before I got into poker, and am planning on getting back into it soon. And I know it sounds like a plug, but I really like doing poker training/coaching. It's really rewarding to see my students improve their game, even though a couple of them have become top MTTers who I now have to play against on a regular basis.

What are your favorite movies and TV shows?  Who are your favorite bands/musical artists?

Talladega Nights and The Big Lebowski are my favorite comedies. Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption are my favorite dramas. My favorite TV shows are Family Guy, Tosh.0, World's Dumbest (Criminals, especially), and the new Impractical Jokers. TruTV kicks ass in general. My favorite artists are Sublime, Biggie, Eminem, Jay-Z, Incubus, Kid Rock, and Tool.

Thanks for taking the time to do this & good luck at the tables.

Unfortunately some people have extremely sad lives & I now have to waste my time typing a blog entry explaining a situation.  Last night a player signed up under me for a Lock account under the name MichelleMisha.  They asked me for a small loan several times despite the fact that I told them I'm sorry but I don't give loans online anymore, as I have been screwed pretty badly before.  Instead of just getting on w/ life they proceeded to tell me what an asshole I am, as if it's expected of me to give a small loan to a complete stranger online just because I make a lot of money.  By the end I was just fed up with it.  He/she then threatened to to tell the world what an asshole I was & not to signup through me, by blogging or any other means.  Minutes later he/she was coming into the chat of every one of my games & saying "JaredHubbard is a liar!  Do not trust him!  This site is a scam!", all of which are made up things simply because I wouldn't loan them $25.  His/her lock account has since been suspended but I know he/she also played on PDC under the name xheffeyx & will almost certainly be making an account on another Merge skin & doing the same nonsense.  FWIW here's his/her PDC sharkscope:

xheffeyx: 5,861 games, $9 Av. Stake, -4% Av. ROI, $193 Total Profit

He has also signed up for an account under the name JaredTheIdiot.  Killer diss dude!

As if their behavior wasn't enough of an indication, but I'm simply not buying this person as 10/20 regular.  I also absolutely cannot stand beggars.  It's 1 thing if you want to ask me for a loan, but at least have the respect to take no as an answer.  Continuing to ask/beg for a loan after they say no is just flat out rude.  Expecting somebody who doesn't know you to give you even a small loan just because you signed up through their link is absurd.  He acts like he was going to make me a fortune as a referral.  In reality it probably would have taken him 5 months to even earn me the $50 in referral income, which he was asking for as a loan.

I'm going to leave you with some email logs between us.  Please read from bottom to top:

please stop messaging me. i told you what i am doing when you are willing to help me out let me know
until then i will be letting people know about you are your site and how you are to people/ also blogging.

i can make new names on merge sites in 1 minute so go ahead get this one suspended also : JaredTheIdiot
untill you are willing to help me out do not msg me bye !!!!!

greedy?  You're the one trying to get money from me, not vice versa.  Nobody in their right mind will think I'm in the wrong.  I don't loan money to people online that I don't know.  You clearly aren't the high stakes player you say you are.  I'm not stupid.  Try fooling a less intelligent player into loaning you money.

I offered my help assisting you in getting signed up on Lock.  I would then give you superior customer service as a referral of mine.  That does not include giving you a loan.

If you made that much you probably wouldn't be BEGGING for a $25-$50 loan.  Lock helps their players but we aren't a bank.

Please give it a rest and contact me if there's anything I can actually help you with.

By now I'm sure most of you have read the Subject Poker article about Merge & the DOJ.  I have already responded in the comments of my last post but feel this matter deserves its own blog post.  After many discussions w/ people at Lock and others in the industry I have comiled some thoughts of myself and others & linked a couple articles.

Hey,

The opinions of some people at Lock are that the article was planted by a Merge competitor. If people panick & cashout of Merge many will go to competitors. There really isn't much there in the article. It never even states that the DOJ is trying to shut down any Merge sites. Rather, it says they are going after the processors. Sites have survived such actions in the past. The source has also confirmed he does not work for the DOJ & is a 2+2 poster. Again, we don't think there's any truth to the article.

The type of DOJ investigation that would lead to an indictment takes years to put together. If there was such an investigation it would have made more sense for the DOJ to indict Merge around the same time as the New York & Maryland indictments were unsealed. Waiting & delaying could only hurt their chances of a succesful prosecution & the chances of a large seizure of funds. Also, the fact that there was no leak of any information about the earlier indictments makes this leak even more unlikely. The only reason for somebody in the DOJ to leak such info would be to help poker players & alert them so that they could withdraw funds. If that is the person's attentions who allegedly leaked the Merge DOJ info then why didn't they leak anything before the indictments of the big 3? It just doesn't add up.

The publishers of the article probably thought they were doing the right thing & helping players. The problem is there was no way for them to really confirm the source aside from asking the DOJ, which they obviously weren't going to do. In reality the article likely just caused a bunch of panic withdrawals, which really doesn't even make sense because if the article were true on the time of DOJ actions the withdraw money would be seized before it reached the player. I have already stated I find the article to be false info, but even if it were true & they went after the processors then withdrawing would be the worst option as your money would be much safer on Merge.

There was also a quadjacks article in the summer claiming that Merge was going to be shut down by the DOJ in x amount of time.  Needless to say that timeframe passed and nothing happened.  The same will almost certainly happen this time.

Lastly, here's a couple links that argue against the subjectpoker article:
http://pokernewsboy.com/poker-gossip/subjectpoker-uses-rumor-and-fear-mongering-in-their-report-on-the-merge-gaming-network/9253

http://pokernewsboy.com/poker-gossip/subjectpoker-uses-rumor-and-fear-mongering-in-their-report-on-the-merge-gaming-network/9253

Hopefully this instills more confidence in the players at Lock and other Merge sites. I think the passage of time absent any DOJ action will show the article to be false & lead players back.

Hopefully everyone likes that I color coded the intro of every blog entry now.  That should make it easier to read for those of you who are regular readers & don't want to skim through the same stuff every entry.  August was a pretty below avg. month but I still profited over $5K before rakeback and all that jazz so not too bad considering I was down about $10K going into the last week of the month.

Away from the tables it was a good month, as every month in the summer generally is.  We had a bachelor party for our friend Josh where we hung out, did some grilling, bags, went to the bars, etc...  Paula & I celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary.  We went to the Dakota country fair.  Personally I'm not a big fair guy but my wife seems to like them so I'll go with her.  To me you basically just walk around, eat a lot of ridiculously unhealthy food that's mostly overrated, drink, and walk into a bunch of buildings you have no interest in cause there's nothing better to do.  That's my summary of state/county fairs.

We also had a weekend bachelor party for our friend Kyle where we rented a cabin for a weekend.  It was quite the riot & I'll def leave out some details.  Our cabin was right across from a bar so it was a nice location.  We also had a keg for the weekend & plenty of booze, cigars,etc...  We did the standard of grilling, fires, bar, bags,etc...  We also rented a super ghetto pontoon (spelling?  that doesn't look right) & almost sunk it cause we had too many people on it.  Water started coming up and some people had to jump off.  For Saturday I got the shameful award of drunkest person there.  We started drinking about 10 am having a couple bloody mary's w/ breakfast & then went right to the keg.  I don't drink light beer that often anymore.  While darker beer has a higher alcohol content, it always fills you up more & you drink it a lot slower.  Light beer just goes down like water & let's just say I wasn't really paying too much attention to pacing myself.  I just don't have the tolerance like I did in college & high school anymore either.

The next weekend I was in my friend Chris's wedding so we had our groom's dinner & rehearsal Friday night, enjoying some drinks & amazing Italian food his mom cooked up.  The wedding was super laid back & only lasted 14 min from the time we started walking in.  That's the way I like it.  The reception was a great time.

We also went to our 1st Saint Paul Saints game, which is a minor league baseball team.  It was pretty fun & I'll prolly go again.

Lastly, we went to the state fair & then a Toby Keith & Eric Church concert, which was a father's day gift from my 4 legged son Gunnar.  Since he gives such good gifts we were in the 8th row so we had great seats.  Eric Church was pretty good & Toby Keith was great.  Thanks Gunnar!

Curb Your Enthusiasm has been great so far this season.  It's 1 show that just seems to get better as the seasons go on.  Larry David is hilarious.  It's definitely my favorite comedy TV show of all time.

It sucks that the summer is over.  At least the NFL & Dexter (best TV show all time) will be starting.  I have 3 fantasy football drafts on Labor Day.  Then it's time for watching the NFL in my sick man cave setup, although I might be watching the 1st week or 2 away from home due to weddings.  My picks for the super bowl are Patriots in AFC & Saints or Falcons in NFC.  Of course I'm no expert & things usually don't workout as people predict.

At the beginning of October my wife & I will be heading to Europe so I might not do my September update til mid October if I don't have time at the end of September.  Once we get back from Europe I plan on playing some Canterbury Fall Classic (http://www.canterburypark.com/Poker/FallPokerClassic/tabid/146/Default.aspx) events in MN.  Here's the events I plan on playing:

Oct 11: $200 NL Holdem (if home in time)
Oct 13: $500 6 Handed NL Holdem
Oct 14: $500 NL Holdem
Oct 15: $1,000 NL Championship (2 Day Event)

I plan on going w/ my brother Jeff (hubs89) & a possible a couple friends (voss1313 & Skapman33).

The Lock store in now up & functioning.  Let me know if you'd like to see them add anything.  Lock also now has double VIP points every Friday starting today.

I'm getting an official website made by http://www.pokerfacepr.com/ that should be done in the near future.  It will combine my blog, twitter, media, bio,etc...

If you do everything right you will find that Lock has some pretty good software.  I'll run through my setup.  I think heavy multitablers will find this especially useful:

-Under the general tab I have checked:
x Don't Prompt When Leaving Games.  If you accidentally click out of a game it can be a pain but overall I prefer this option much better for multitabling.  USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

-Under contacts tab:
There's not much to do here.  The friends & privacy is obv player dependant.  You might want  to setup the tags images differently.  For example, I labeled the crown as decent & the red chip as breakeven.

-Under the game tab I have checked:
x Auto Muck
x 4 Color Deck
x Show Winning Percentages
x Hide Hand Descriptions
x Show player chat (depends what your preference is)
Hand History:
x Keep Hand History
-Under display tab:
x Single
x High Graphics Quality (you may want to go lower if your PC is slower)
Depending on your setup you may want to play around with this tab.  I have 2 30" monitors & 2 20" monitors so I never tile, cascade, etc...  Games just come in w/ no overlap.  It's all a matter of preference & monitor setup.

-Under Buy In/Rebuy Tab:
I don't currently play any cash games so I haven't done anything with this tab.  If you do play cash you will certainly want to look into it.

-Under Sounds Tab:
x Play sounds only on my action (I think this one is an absolute must for multitablers.  Otherwise there's too many sounds going on & it's hard to tell when it's your turn on different tables.)

I think SNG players will find the all in button to be an amazing feature of the software.  When you hit the all in button it instantly bets your whole stack.  There's no clicking the table, then clicking all in, & then hitting enter nonsense.  It's 1 click & your goal is accomplished.

Now that you've changed your settings it's time to download MergeKeys:
http://runbetterpoker.com/

The above link has temporarily been moved to http://ns2059.hostgator.com/~jl12345/

MergeKeys is an AHK program like Table Ninja.  It's currently in beta mode & is free.  I believe it's essential for multitablers.  Follow the instructions on the site & download MergeKeys.

Now let's talk about the MergeKeys settings:

Under pot betting tab:
-Setup the pot betting keys to whatever you would like.  I have 1/2 pot as F9, 2/3 pot as F10, 3/4 pot as F11, pot as F8, and all in as F12.  The way I have it setup I just keep my 4 left handed fingers minus my thumb on keys F9 through F12 so I have my pinky on F9 & pointer on F12.  If I want to take a certain action I then just press my finger down on the appopriate key.  If I want to bet pot I slide my pinky to F8 & if I want to register of deregister I slide my pinky to F7.  The 1/2 pot hotkey will also minraise preflop & I use the pot hotkey to 3x from the BB when a player limps HU.
-Again, I don't use any of the mouse buttons, but I know players like voss1313 love them.  Figure out what your preference is & roll with it.  I might try setting my right mouse button to fold.
-Below that I the only thing I have on is Auto-fire bet/raise when pot betting buttons used.  If you have F9 setup for a 2/3 pot bet this allows you to simply press F9 and the bet will be done, rather than having to press F9 & then enter.

Under layout manager tab:
-Again, because of my monitor setup and preference I don't use this tab.  However, many of you will want to look into it.

Under player setup tab:
-Make sure you complete the auto setup before running MergeKeys.  You have to have the Lock Poker lobby open when you do this & I believe you have to click the Lock lobby after clicking auto setup.
-Also make sure you select the correct table mode you use.  I prefer normal but I know a lot of people prefer mini.

-Under donate tab:
If you like the software feel free to donate.

Under random beta keys tab:
-Table frame thickness: 1 (I'm not a fan of frames)
-Virtual Mouse Wheel: I don't use any of these but look into it if you're interested.
-On the right side:
-On: check if available when folding
-On: Handle Tourn SNG/Reg windows (This allows you to register & deregister from games with 1 click)
-SNG/Tournament register (lobby): F7 (This allows you to click on a game in the lobby & click a key on your keyboard to register for that game)
-On: auto-activate window under cursor (With this option you don't have to click the table before you make a bet.  Just move your mouse pointer to anywhere on the table & it activates that table.)
-On: Auto Time Bank (With this feature it's tough time timeout.  If you don't get to the table on time it automatically activates your timebank)

Depending on your setup you may want some different features on or off in that section.  For example, I think cash players will definitely want handle buy-in windows (cash only) on.

Whenever making changes to MergeKeys MAKE SURE YOU CLICK SAVE AND CONTINUE BEFORE EXITING.

I haven't used it or talked to anyone who has but you may also want to check out MergeMods:
http://runbetterpoker.com/?q=MergeMods

MergeMods allows you to use Full Tilt Sounds, Full Tilt carpets, etc... while playing on Lock Poker.

Now you're ready to optimally multitable on Lock Poker.

Team Vogel was created by Joe Vogel, a friend of ours who passed away with Cancer.  It is being carried on by his family and they're having they're having a benefit later this month.  I'm looking into getting a Team Vogel banner for my blog.
